Often when my husband was busy in his office, I would bring him a cup of tea. I would walk up behind him, hand him the tea, and drink in his essence. The smell of his hair, his freshly starched shirt, the warmth of his neck. I would breathe deeply and think, Don’t let anything happen to this man, I love him so.

It’s odd to say this, but I had a “Plan B” if anything actually did happen to Pary. Having always been interested in the spiritual tenets of my Christian faith and the mysteries of the liturgy, I reasoned that I would attend theological school. When I am at home, I attend my Heritage Episcopal Church and gather great strength from it. I know that there are deep truths embedded in those timeless spiritual passages that carry wisdom and meaning to this day. Over the years, I have found it fascinating to explore the significance of some of these passages. If the Universe has a plan for my life, it seems obvious that it would use a catalytic event to propel me into the exploration of higher metaphysical truths.

In this case, no one actually had to die, literally or physically. Nonetheless, I feel that I did become a widow, and this symbolic state gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in the “higher teachings.” They would heal me!
